The Holy Spirit - Being Ghosted the Right Way
In pop culture, being ghosted means that somebody you try to communicate with is not responding to you. They are basically keeping you on "read," as others would call it. This can be pretty hard for some people because they either relied on an answer or feel isolated and ignored. Imagine your future path hangs on one response that you are waiting for. This would make you lose your patience, and it would probably give you a couple of sleepless nights. Now, imagine it would not just impact your future path here on earth, but all of eternity. This would be hell, yes literally hell, because we would be separated from God and his word. Luckily, there is a "response": The Holy Spirit.
<<When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly a sound came from heaven like the rush of a mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared to them tongues as of fire, distributed and resting on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.>> (Acts 2:1-4, RSVCE)
When Jesus ascended to Heaven, he did not just leave his disciples alone all by themselves. He had promised them a helper that would be sent to them by him. On the first Pentecost ("fiftieth", Easter day plus 49 days), the Apostles received the Holy Spirit, sometimes called the Holy Ghost. Through this gift, they were able to speak in languages that they did not know. Why would they want to do that? Well, on that day, which was a Jewish holiday, a lot of Jews from all over the Mediterranean region had come to Jerusalem. Some of them did not speak Aramaic well, so preaching to them in their languages would reach them best. This way, the Gospel could be preached with power and authority to the Jews first, as well as the Gentiles later.
(LDS Children's Songbook)
Now, the first Pentecost happened with a Holy Spirit that entered the room like a whirlwind, giving the Apostles flame-like halos on their heads. But often, the Holy Spirit talks to us with a still small voice, pretty much like a whisper. It can be hard to hear him; yes, it may at times feel like he is ghosting us. But we must remember that God loves us more than we can imagine, and he wants us to have guidance by the Holy Spirit. Sometimes, we may have to change the way we listen, at other times, we might be distracted by the noises of the world.
One way that we can "hear" the Holy Spirit is by prayerfully reading the scriptures. He is not always talking to us through audible words, but rather through other people or through verses in the scriptures that suddenly have more meaning to us. With the Holy Spirit, it is always good to expect the unexpected. Sometimes, he responds to our prayers in ways that we would not even have considered. A good way to get in contact is through temple worship. In the temple, the presence of the Holy Spirit is very strong, especially in the Celestial Room. But, whatever you do, do not lose hope if he does not respond the same moment you ask him something. God has his own time plan, and it is usually better than ours (actually it is ALWAYS better). Therefore, please do not give up on the Holy Ghost, because he has not given up on you.
